After spending most of his life conscious of the way he looked, Mike Quinn, 35, decided it was time to face his weight problem and make a lifestyle change. Here, he tells us how he lost a life-changing 7st 3lb* with LighterLife diet plan.
When did your weight become a problem?
“My brother is four years older than me, and when we were younger I’d always get his hand-me-downs, but they would only just fit me! Over the years, through a lack of exercise and unhealthy food choices, my weight just crept up. I used any excuse to eat – happy, sad or miserable, I’d eat. During my teens, I’d go out most weekends drinking. I was never much of a cook so I’d choose the easy option and have a takeaway. I did dabble in a few diets, such as Weight Watchers. I’d lose a few pounds then treat myself at the weekends with junk. I became a bit of a yo-yo dieter.”
How did you feel at your biggest?
“Miserable. I was constantly conscious of my weight. I’d wear a black jacket and a black scarf, and I’d safety-pin the scarf to my jacket so it wouldn’t blow in the wind and reveal my chest. I didn’t have any confidence; I just felt that people were looking at me and thinking how disgusting I was. My worst memory was starting a new job. I was so conscious of wearing a white shirt that I wore a jacket all day, every day.”
What was your lightbulb moment?
“Besides the obvious things, like clothes not fitting and being self-conscious, the turning point for me was when I had to go for a biopsy to get a lump on my back checked out. Before my appointment, I was told that there would be a student doctor observing my procedure. I wasn’t concerned about whether or not the results would be life threatening – all I could think about was how embarrassed I was going to be taking my top off. This was when reality struck. My weight had controlled my life for far too long – I just had to do something about it.”
Why was LighterLife right for you?
“I needed something that totally eliminated food. I felt that I’d developed a bad relationship with it and that I was stuck in this vicious circle of choosing the wrong foods. LighterLife allowed me to start again from scratch. I didn’t have to go shopping for food, count calories or count ‘sins’ like other diets. I still went out as usual with my mates. It made me realise that I didn’t need food and drink to have a good time.”
How did you feel when you reached your goal?
“I lost an amazing 7st 3lb on LighterLife. I couldn’t quite believe it! Management taught me so much about portion control, and I now know what my body needs to survive. The biggest thing I learned about my eating habits was the way I would treat myself with food. I started to realise that those so called ‘treats’ were not treats at all, they were the things that were making me miserable. These days, I treat myself with lovely clothes – it’s much more rewarding than a slice of cake!”
How has your life changed?
“I’ve loved every minute of my LighterLife journey. My friends and family have even noticed that I’m a lot happier in myself – I’ve never felt so confident. I don’t buy black clothes anymore, and I now go to the gym and feel like I fit in. I’m going on holiday this year, and I can’t wait to wear my trunks without feeling self-conscious!
The best thing about my life now is not having to worry about what other people think of me. If I hadn’t have found LighterLife, I’d still be wearing scarves and jackets in the summer. Life is a whole lot easier and a much happier place to be.”
