What science and research are there supporting TotalFast?

How does a VLCD work?

With a plan like TotalFast, you’re significantly reducing the amount of calories you eat daily. So, what initially happens, is your body starts to burn the carbohydrate (glycogen) stores found in your muscles and liver, to make up some of that extra energy that you’re no longer consuming via conventional food, that your body needs to run smoothly.

In addition to burning these carbohydrates for fuel, you’ll also be losing the water weight stored with it and so that first 7-10 days results in a very noticeable difference on the scale. Once you’ve depleted your glycogen stores you will continue to lose weight, but this will take place a little more slowly, and this is because your body has ‘metabolically switched’ to burning the excess stored fat, which is used as fuel alongside your four daily Foodpacks.

So, whilst weight loss does slow down at this stage, you’re now in a fat-burning state of negative energy balance and are slowly but steadily using up your fat stores. The low calorie levels of this types of diet means that everyone will lose weight and the added bonus here is that ketone bodies (what your liver converts your into before it can be used by your body for fuel) have been shown in various studies to help suppress your appetite too. You’re now in ketosis, and are steadily losing weight.

Who should consider a VLCD?

VLCDs are recommended for anyone who is overweight or obese and who wants (or needs) to lose weight effectively using a strictly nutritionally balanced plan.

Are VLCDs safe?

As stated earlier, yes VLCDs have a proven safety record and are good for your health.

How long should a VLCD be followed?

In the past VLCDs have been recommended for shorter-term use, typically up to 12 weeks. That said, many of our clients for whom a VLCD is suitable have followed TotalFast for longer than this, and up to several months if that’s what they‘ve needed to do to lose weight.

To make sure our weight loss programme is suitable, all LighterLife clients are required to complete a health questionnaire when starting TotalFast to ensure they are in no way contra-indicated.

“There’s no reason to come off plan if you aren’t at your weight loss goal, simply because a defined period of time has lapsed. For those with a large amount of weight to lose, this can take many months and, provided you’re consuming the four Foodpacks per day as advised, and are generally fit and well, then you can continue as you need to.
